Hagerstown Rotary Literacy Initiative and Task Force

Purpose Statement: The Hagerstown Rotary Literacy Initiative will advocate for a community-wide collaboration to increase the number of students entering school ready to learn and decrease the number of elementary students experiencing summer learning loss.

About Rotary

Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders from the community that the club serves.
The Rotary Club of Hagerstown is one of five Rotary Clubs in Washington County. Started in 1915 and with over 170 members, it is the oldest and largest of these clubs. Included among its members are many well regarded, recognized, and respected community, business and service leaders.

Our Club is part of a large international organization, Rotary International. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

  • FIRST - The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service
  • SECOND - High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society
  • THIRD - The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life
  • FOURTH - The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation recognize these six areas of focus as organizational priorities, and there are countless ways that Rotarians can address these needs locally and internationally.

Rotary clubs serve communities around the world, each with unique concerns and needs. Rotarians have continually adapted and improved the way they respond to those needs, taking on a broad range of service projects. We work on projects that are consistent with Rotary’s Areas of Focus. Basic Education and Literacy is one of these six areas. In the case of our Club, after due reflection, Childhood Literacy issues were identified as a priority. Other Areas of Focus for Rotary include:

  • Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
  • Disease prevention and treatment
  • Water and sanitation
  • Maternal and child health
  • Economic and community development
